Local sports talk radio is usually a vast wasteland of cliches and platitudes, with very little to offer in terms of authentic comments or observations. That was definitely not the case this morning here in Los Angeles, where Phil Jackson let his guard down a little and got off a nice wisecrack that got an extremely rare reaction from the hosts: dead silence.
It happened on 570AM's "Roggin and Simers2" show, which features respected journalist Fred Roggin, not-so-respected journalist T.J. Simers, and (inexplicably) his daughter, who as far as I can tell has no business being on the radio. I don't listen to local radio EVER, but our buddy Sarge e-mailed us the clip of the interview. It features Jackson making fun of the Kwame Brown police investigation that was going on during last year's playoffs. Here's what the Zen Master had to say:
"Unfortunately we had a couple of things that jogged us off the edge there. Kwame got a little bit shaky after that incident that uh, Phoenix sends uh, set up a hooker for him and everything fell apart and...(DEAD SILENCE, then Phil chuckles and says) I JOKE ABOUT THAT..." followed by loud uncomfortable laughter from the radio daughter.
Freaking hilarious, and that's the beauty of having a 9-time champion coach on the verge of retirement...he says whatever the hell he wants! You can download the entire interview here, this quote happens about four minutes in.
