Bah. Let the record show that it was the Celtics and their fans that first called the Lakers the "Fakers." They also started the "Beat L.A." chants, created the "I hate L.A." t-shirts, and so on.

But you know what? I'm all for fans celebrating. I mean, let's face it, there are too few "real" reasons to celebrate in life. For instance, I'm a big time Celtics fan, but they haven't won it all in over 20 years. I'm also a Pacers fan, and I know they'll break my heart every year, but I'm still going to try to enjoy the ride...no matter how badly the eventual crash will mutilate me.

Craig:

I have terrible news:

"Mr. Aryan Nation Rich Guy" = Jew.

...but I feel you.

Craig

"Mr. Aryan Nation Rich Guy" = Jew.

Wow! I really blew that one. Maybe I should mix in some research next time.

Craig

"But you know what? I'm all for fans celebrating."

I have no problems with people celebrating wins. My issue has always been NBA marketing departments continuing to pitch to the lowest common denominator. Multiple alternate jerseys, MVP banner ceremonies (Utah for Malone in 1997), Gorillas on motorcycles, the Slamrocks, fat guys dancing during timeouts, PA guys doing a 50-50 mix of cocaine and helium during games, old worn our slogans (Mission Possible and Beat LA)... these all drive me batty.

Do fans suffer from so much ADD that we can’t simply watch 5 minutes of basketball without some a-hole telling me to “make some noise” or some orange ball of fluff (or in PHX’s case, a gorilla) dropping from the rafters waving a huge “Mission Possible” flag while firing tee-shirts into the corporate suites?

Check out this ebay auction, and scroll all the way down to see a picture of the tickets:

What's with the kids and inflatable gorilla pictures? Either the Suns are into kiddie porn, or there is a local NAMBLA chapter sponsoring their games.

Craig

I'm sure the Suns marketing department are figuring, "We need to tap into those NAMBLA dollars!"

I agree with most of what you say, and of course I hate the Slamrocks with every fiber of my being. Frankly, I blame Michael Jordan. The way the NBA and the Bulls marketed him and his team set the Gold Standard for all the b.s. and theatrics surrounding today's NBA.

Do fans suffer from so much ADD that we can’t simply watch 5 minutes of basketball without some a-hole telling me to "make some noise" or some orange ball of fluff (or in PHX’s case, a gorilla) dropping from the rafters waving a huge "Mission Possible" flag while firing tee-shirts into the corporate suites?

It's not about fans suffering from ADD. These promotional stunts aren't aimed at true fans of the game; those people are going to watch games regardless of the promotions. No, the league and individual teams are trying to attract the casual fans and even non-fans who just want to be entertained in some novel way. The NBA wants families in the stands, and little Johnny isn't going to sit still for 3 hours unless there are fireworks and inflatable mascots and what have you.

So people like us, old-school fans, get annoyed because most of these things detract from the purity of the game. But we keep watching because we love the game. And the new-schoolers, they keep watching because, you know, flashing lights and pretty colors.

Craig,
I think it Robert Sarver looks hot in his Orange shirt!
I think it looks like fashion and he should just wear it on the outside!
Get some taste!

Audrie

Craig:

Robert Sarver is totally hot!! His shirt looks hot and he looks sexy - NOT GAY!!
It's a WINNER!

Craig

Ladies... Orange is soooo 2004!

Brett

Chicks reading the site, nice.

Would Sarver really be considered "hot" in a flaming orange shirt and engorged purple finger (on his hand, let's not get too excited there) if he wasn't a bajillionaire? I wonder...

Sarah Geneve

I love the way he looks in that bright orange shirt! At least he wearing a fashion piece and not a dumb T Shirt! Who's the designer???

Brian Hoffman

My wife is watching the games only to see this guy. She and her friends say hes a sex symbol.

I'm happy -she doesn't flip the channel.

Craig

"My wife is watching the games only to see this guy."

I am SHOCKED at all of this! $arver a $ex $ymbol? Simply stunning...

I would try the same thing here to get my wife to watch Laker games except that Laker owner Jerry Buss is 70+ years old with a gut and dates 18-year old "models."

Mike Firestone

Sarvers shirt is not my cup of tea, but my wife loves it and wants to buy one for me. She says Orange is it.
I promised her if she lets me watch the game I will try it. If I have to I will only wear it at home.
Great Job Sarver on getting women into the game!

Kevin C.
