Dammit, Brett. I was just going to post about this, and then I thought, "I bet that guy over at The Association is one this." And indeed you were. So I'll let it go. But I agree with you; officiating didn't decide the game. The Mavs just lost it. Part of it was D, and another part of it was the Mavs lack of ball movement. They had 10 assists. Their starting point guard had one. One! When Jerry Stackhouse leads your team in assists, something is terribly, terribly wrong.

But I will say this: I agree with Stackhouse that Bavetta stinks to high heaven. That double technical was a bailout, and Horry freaking BIT Stackhouse. Jesus. Anyway, Bavetta is responsible for what may be the absolute worst call in NBA history...the 1999 Eastern Conference Finals, when Larry Johnson got fouled, took a dribble and two steps, then shot a three...and GOT CONTINUATION!! That four-point play killed the Pacers, who would have gone up 3-1, but ended up losing the series in 6 games. So yeah, fuck Dick Bavetta.

Sorry to rant.

Brett

Well, the assist thing is pretty much how the Mavs play. They're 27th in the league in team assists due to all the one-on-one style players they have (Dirk, Terry, Stackhouse, Howard).

And your point about the '99 Eastern Conference Finals is right, that was a bad call. But remember LJ making the "L" with his arms every time he made a 3, even when he banked one in? That was the best.

Sorry Jer-Bear, but you're an “underrated” Biggie song on this one.

You're right, that is exactly how they play. And it's the kind of thing that's going to come back to haunt them in the playoffs when they face the better teams (i.e., the Spurs and the Pistons). If you don't involve your role-players, they may not come through for you when you need them.

I wanted to break Larry's arms every time he did that. Of course, since I'm a Pacers fan the Jackson Jiggle never bothered me...

Ever heard of Murphy's Law? I tell you here I'm going to ignore this, and my buddy Dave -- who's only contributed two posts, the last of which was months ago -- posts about this. Which, of course, makes me feel like a jackass. Just sayin'.
