Yesterday was a bad day for the domers. First Notre Dame lost to The Ohio State University 34-20 in the Fiesta Bowl, then Seattle's Bob Weiss gets fired. The writing was on the wall as virtually the same Seattle team that overachieved to a Northwest Division title fell to a 13-17 record under Weiss. Below is a list of quality coaching candidates for the Sonics head coaching spot:
Mike Jarvis: The guy was a decent coach at St. John's while under the New York media spotlight. He was also one of the last coaches to keep Ron Artest in check while at St. John's. Added bonus: the guy pulls $12,500 as a keynote speaker(?!?). Obviously the guy is good at selling himself.
Jerry Sichting: The second most hated Celtic from the Bird Era (behind Danny Ainge), this former Minnesota and Indiana assistant was getting a lot of coaching buzz a few years ago. Maybe he'll get his chance.
Rick Majerus: Isn't he involved in every college basketball head coaching search? The guy was able to win with 33 year old college players at Utah so why not take his skills to younger players in The Association. Added bonus, with his weight issues and constant health problems, he's a guaranteed addition to the Dead Pool.
Phil Martelli: Taking mid-major Saint Joseph's to the Elite Eight a few years ago was amazing. "Philly Guy" Martelli needs a new challenge, why not bring that East Coast toughness to the rainy Pacific Northwest. BTW - What the hell is a Philly Guy and why does that carry so much street cred in sports? Hey Philly, booing Santa Claus, while impressive does not make you a tough guy.
Lefty Driesell: The college basketball equivalent of Abe Vigoda. If he's still alive he may be the right guy to relate to Sonics. (They are both still alive) Added bonus: He can scare straight any player with a drug problem, he was Len Bias's last head coach.
Granville Waiters: How can I not include this guy? Made famous for going bald before hitting 25 and playing before it was cool to shave the head to cover up the male pattern baldness. How bad were the early Jordan Bulls? This guy was a starting center for 26 games in 1987. With career stats like these how can the Sonics pass on him as a head coach?
